THE BEST WINES ARE BORN IN THE VINEYARD

Il Piano wines are made in a region that has long been recognised for producing wines of rare depth and complexity under the

San Gimignano DOC and Colli Senesi DOCG appellations.

Although our cantinas date from the early 1900s, wine has been made at Il Piano for

centuries. From our commitment to the vines to our hands-on wine making, the wines

of Il Piano benefit from a loving approach, that includes small lot fermentation

   and patient aging.

TENUTA IL PIANO SAN GIMIGNANO VIN SANTO  DOC 2009

100% Trebbiano, 15.5% Vol

Offered in 500ml bottles                                                20.00 euro

This six year old dessert wine is now  at its best.In Tuscany it is served with twice baked biscuits called Cantucci.

Vin Santo (Holy Wine) is Tuscany’s renowned straw wine named from the time when these wines were used for Holy Communion; called a straw wine as the grapes were originally dried on beds of Straw. The Il Piano Vin Santo is made from Trebbiano grapes carefully selected and picked by hand when at their best, then put on racks of bamboo and left to dry for three months. Once desiccated enough, normally they lose 60% of their original volume,  they are gently pressed, fermented, then aged in small chestnut barrels, called Caratelli,  for a minimum of three years. This gives a more traditional Vin Santo than that often produced nowadays. It resembles a dry fortified wine, rather than a sweet nectar.

The inspiration for the label came from the family chapel atIl Piano, with it rich cobalt blue ceiling and gold leaf detailing.

We harvest by hand at peak ripeness, and  macerate the grapes for an extended period to develop the rich colours, aroma, and flavour of the fruit. Our wines are matured in concrete tanks, then selected wines are barrel-aged to add additional nuances and depth of flavour.

Our wines, made from our best estate fruit and inspired by our ’terroir’, embody the essence of  Tuscan wine making philosophy.
